The death toll in a major tunnel accident in Sikkim's Namchi district has risen to 12, with 13 workers still trapped inside. A rescue operation is under way to bring them out. According to initial reports, the disaster was triggered by a methane gas leak inside the tunnel, followed by an explosion that caused part of the tunnel to collapse. Authorities say the large volume of debris has made rescue and relief efforts considerably difficult.
Methane gas explosion cited as cause of accident
The accident occurred in the tunnel of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation's (NHPC) 500 MW Teesta Stage-VI Hydropower Project. According to the company, methane gas trapped within rock formations was suddenly released during tunnel excavation, triggering an explosion. Toxic smoke and gas subsequently spread through the tunnel. Officials say carbon monoxide has also been detected inside, making it extremely difficult for rescue teams to operate. Burn marks found on the bodies of the deceased have further strengthened suspicions of a gas explosion.
Death toll feared to rise further
A total of 25 workers were present inside the tunnel at the time of the accident. So far, 12 bodies have been recovered, while a search continues for 13 missing workers. A special rescue team from Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), sent from West Bengal, has joined the rescue operation. The team has reported spotting eight more bodies inside the tunnel, though district authorities are yet to officially confirm this. Officials say mud and toxic gas inside the tunnel are slowing down rescue efforts.
Government announces compensation and inquiry
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang visited the accident site and announced compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. He also announced the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the incident. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Chief Minister and assured all possible assistance. The Prime Minister also announced ex-gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. A two-minute silence was observed in the state assembly to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.
