Kannauj: Sukhveer Singh alias Monu of Jagatpur village in the Chhibramau Kotwali area had a quarrel with his wife, Sonam Rathore, 30, at around 7:15 am on Thursday. He allegedly sprinkled petrol on her and set her on fire during the quarrel. Villagers and a fire brigade team reached the spot after being informed. By the time the fire was brought under control, Sonam had died.

Son Says Mother Was Tied With Wire and Set on Fire

Sonam's son, Vedant, has given the police several important details about the incident. According to him, his father often beat his mother. On Thursday, his uncle Shubhmangal Singh, son of Jitendra Singh, gave his father money to buy petrol. His father then reached home on a bike with petrol, along with the son of his paternal aunt.

Vedant said that after reaching home, his father tied his mother to the bed in the room with wire. He then poured petrol on her and set her on fire. He said his mother, engulfed in flames, screamed for help for a long time, but his father did not save her. It is alleged that after the incident, the father locked the room from outside and left with both children.

Flames Rose From House for About an Hour

After Sonam was set on fire, the flames engulfed the entire house, and tall flames soon rose from it. Villagers feared that a domestic gas cylinder inside the house could explode, so they could not muster the courage to go close to it. The fire kept raging for about an hour. A fire brigade team that arrived later brought it under control after considerable effort.

Accused Allegedly Told Police He Killed Wife Because She Betrayed Him

After the incident, Sukhveer went to a police post with both his children. In front of the police personnel there, he folded his hands and told them he had burnt his deceitful wife alive. He allegedly told police that he loved his wife very much, but she had betrayed him, which he could not tolerate. Police have arrested the accused.

Villagers Say Accused Doubted Wife's Character

According to villagers, Sukhveer had brought Sonam to the village from Gurugram about 12 years ago. He had told people that the two had married. He later also said that Sonam had earlier been married in Bhind and had separated from there and come with him. Villagers claim that Sukhveer doubted his wife's character, and the couple often quarrelled over this. They had argued over the same issue on Wednesday night as well.

Sukhveer and Sonam have a son and a daughter. After the incident, police handed both children over to their maternal grandmother, Sonam's mother. Police are currently questioning the accused, and further legal action is being taken on the basis of the investigation of all aspects, including the child's statement.
