Tensions between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz continue to escalate. Despite a message from BRICS calling for de-escalation and a resolution through dialogue, US President Donald Trump showed no signs of softening his stance.

Instead, the United States has intensified its naval operations in the Hormuz region. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the US Navy had forced 101 commercial vessels to alter their course through this crucial waterway as of 13 September.

US Stance Unchanged Despite BRICS Message

Despite BRICS issuing a message regarding the rising tensions between the US and Iran, Washington gave no indication of halting its operations. The Trump administration has maintained pressure on Iran, and US naval activity in the Hormuz region continues.

America's actions make clear it is not inclined to ease pressure on Iran. Amid efforts to reduce tensions through dialogue, this move on the maritime front could further worsen the situation, according to the report.

101 Commercial Ships Rerouted

CENTCOM stated that the US Navy has so far forced 101 commercial vessels to change course in the Hormuz strait. These ships include various types of commercial and cargo vessels.

This action indicates increased American surveillance and pressure over the normal movement of ships through Hormuz. Should the situation persist, it could affect maritime trade as well as energy markets.

Blockade Resumed in July

The US had resumed its blockade of Iranian ports in July, a decision taken after talks between Washington and Tehran broke down.

The US and Iran already have existing tensions over the nuclear programme and other issues. Despite efforts to resolve the dispute through negotiation, trust between the two sides has not been established.

Why Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important oil transport routes, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and onward to the Arabian Sea. It is vital for several major oil-producing nations in the Gulf.

Prolonged disruption to shipping through this route could put pressure on oil prices, shipping costs, and insurance costs, the report noted. This could also impact Asian countries that import oil from the Gulf region.
