In response, the United States and United Kingdom are reportedly preparing to hold a high-level meeting in London next week, aimed at forming a robust international maritime coalition to safeguard shipping passing through the strategic waterway.

Senior military officials expected in London

According to media reports, the emergency meeting in London could bring together Western nations alongside defence ministers and senior military officers from Middle Eastern countries. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine are believed to be considering attending in person, although the exact date and time of the meeting are still being finalised. A White House official has acknowledged that both countries are working together on the initiative.

Trump's blunt warning: "One attack, and we'll blow up Iran's power plant"

The diplomatic flurry follows a stern warning from US President Donald Trump directed at Iran. Trump stated bluntly on social media that if Iran fires a missile, rocket or drone at any vessel in the strait, America will not stay silent — and in retaliation, US forces would bomb and destroy a major Iranian bridge or power plant. Trump also made clear that the United States has no intention of withdrawing from the region.

Why is America seeking help from other nations?

European diplomats suggest Washington is keen to avoid direct war with Iran and is therefore urging Britain, France and other allies to step up and share responsibility for maritime security. The US reportedly wants allied nations to deploy minesweepers, naval vessels and drones along the route to help secure it.

Crude oil prices surge as Oman plays peacemaker

Global crude oil prices have surged sharply following the attacks on commercial ships, raising fears of costlier fuel worldwide and adding economic pressure on Washington. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to defuse the crisis are underway — a delegation from neighbouring Oman has travelled to Tehran in an attempt to help reopen the waterway safely through negotiation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has also spoken by phone with Omani leaders on the matter.
