Motive behind Delhi University professor's murder revealed

Debosmita Paul Case Update: Debosmita Paul, an Assistant Professor at Delhi University’s Shivaji College, was busy preparing for her upcoming summer vacation. She had promised her colleague, Nidhi Garg, that she would bring back a famous Kantha-work saree from Bengal, and was planning a trip there with her elderly parents. Little did she know that her journey would never begin. She was brutally murdered inside her flat in East Delhi’s Vasundhara Enclave. Shockingly, the crime was committed by none other than her tenants—a husband and wife who had travelled to Delhi from Bengal.

A Bloody Conspiracy to Usurp Property

The investigation has revealed a deeply shocking motive. Debosmita owned an ancestral house in Burdwan, West Bengal, where the accused couple lived as tenants, paying a monthly rent of ₹11,500. The accused aimed to illegally grab the property. However, Debosmita foiled their plans by strictly asking them to vacate the house by June. Unhappy with this demand and fueled by resentment over being asked to leave, the couple hatched a conspiracy to murder the professor, using their child as a shield. They travelled with a heavy mortar and pestle (okhli-musal) and a razor to commit the crime. To avoid raising any suspicion among the society's security guards, they brought along their 13-year-old son so that people would mistake them for an ordinary family visiting.

Attacked on the Pretext of Asking for Water

On the afternoon of June 4, the family arrived at Debosmita’s flat wearing surgical masks. Out of courtesy, Debosmita offered them drinking water. However, as the argument escalated over vacating the house, the husband struck Debosmita on the head multiple times with the heavy mortar. When she collapsed onto the floor, bleeding profusely, they slit her wrist with the razor to ensure she was dead. To destroy evidence, they changed out of their blood-stained clothes inside her flat and fled with the professor's mobile phone.

College Staff and Students in Deep Shock

Expressing his grief, Virendra Bhardwaj, the Principal of Shivaji College, said that Debosmita was like a daughter to him. She was an integral part of the college’s cultural committee and magazine board. Although the police have arrested the accused husband and wife with the help of CCTV footage, the entire college staff and student community remain in deep shock that the cheerful professor, who was with them just the other day, is no more.
