PM Narendra Modi becomes India’s longest-serving Prime Minister, crossing 4,399 days in office. Italy PM Giorgia Meloni extends congratulations.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has scripted history today. Breaking a decades-old record held by India’s first elected Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, PM Modi has officially surpassed the 4,399-day mark in office. Pandit Nehru's tenure as Prime Minister lasted 4,398 days. With this milestone, PM Modi now holds the record for being the longest-serving Prime Minister of India.
Congratulations have been pouring in for PM Modi from across the country and around the globe. Joining world leaders in marking the occasion, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni extended her warmest wishes to PM Modi.
"A Pleasure Meeting PM Modi Again," Says Giorgia Meloni
Sharing a photograph with PM Modi on social media, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni expressed her admiration for his historic achievement.
"Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who today becomes the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in India's history. It was a pleasure meeting him again recently in Rome to jointly launch a special Strategic Partnership. This partnership looks to the future, focusing on creating new opportunities for our countries and people," Meloni wrote.
Deepening Bilateral Ties and Stronger Indo-Italian Bonds
The congratulatory message comes on the heels of PM Modi's recent high-profile visit to Italy. On May 19, during the final leg of his five-nation tour, PM Modi arrived in the Italian capital, Rome, where he was accorded a grand welcome by PM Meloni. A state dinner was also hosted in his honour.
During their bilateral meeting, both leaders strongly emphasised strengthening the relationship between India and Italy.
Key highlights of their engagements included:
Strategic Partnership: The launch of a special strategic partnership aimed at taking bilateral ties to new heights.
Key Agreements: Landmark pacts were signed across multiple sectors, including a Defense Industrial Roadmap, trade expansion, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), clean energy, technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and security cooperation.
Cultural Diplomacy: Moving beyond official boardrooms, the two leaders visited the historic Colosseum together, enjoyed a car ride, and shared a selfie while reflecting on shared democratic values and a common vision for the future.
