Russia has once again struck the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, with a barrage of missiles and drones. The overnight assault, carried out in the early hours of Thursday local time, triggered a series of powerful explosions across the city, sparking fires and damaging several residential buildings, according to a report by The New York Times.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had earlier warned of the impending attack, citing intelligence briefings, and urged citizens to take air raid sirens seriously and remain vigilant. Following his warning of a potential large-scale strike, large numbers of residents took shelter in metro stations, with many bringing sleeping bags and pets along with them.

As air raid sirens sounded across Kyiv, Russia launched its assault using drones and ballistic missiles. Locals first reported hearing sustained fire from Ukraine's air defence systems, followed by a series of powerful explosions across the city. Fires broke out in several locations, including the city centre.

Five Medical Workers Injured in Attack

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in safe shelters, revealing that part of a nine-storey building had collapsed, with fears that people may be trapped beneath the rubble. Firefighters worked to bring several blazes under control, including a fire on a hotel roof and another in a residential block. Initial reports indicate that five medical workers were injured in the strikes, though the full extent of casualties remains unclear.

The attack comes at a time when Ukraine has intensified its own long-range drone strikes in retaliation, recently targeting Moscow, Russian fuel supply depots, and the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014. Before returning to Ukraine from a visit to Ireland, President Zelenskyy said that Vladimir Putin intends to continue the war, and that conditions must be imposed on him that make continuing the conflict impossible.

Poland Activates Fighter Jets and Air Defence Systems

Following Russia's latest aerial assault on Ukraine, Poland has activated its fighter jets and air defence systems. According to a Reuters report, Poland said the move was a precautionary measure to safeguard its airspace along the border.
