Former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has ended the Republican Party's long hold on the governor's office in Georgia. She faced a billionaire opponent, heavy campaign spending and old controversies, but won the election.

From Controversies to the Top Office

Bottoms is now the first Black woman to become governor of any US state. When her name was announced as the winner, Georgia saw a decades-old political trend reverse. The state has had Republican governors continuously since 2002, but Bottoms changed that.

Her biggest contest was against billionaire Republican candidate Rick Jackson. Jackson had plenty of money and spent heavily on campaigning, but voters put their trust in Bottoms.

The journey was not easy. Several controversies arose during Bottoms' time as Atlanta mayor, crime also increased, Covid hit the city hard and questions were raised over policing. In 2020, when anger was running high across the US after George Floyd's death, Rayshard Brooks died in police firing in Atlanta. At the time, Bottoms faced pressure on both law and order and civil rights. Difficulties and criticism followed, but Bottoms held her ground and entered statewide politics.

Personal Struggles Also Shaped Her Identity

Bottoms' story is not limited to political achievements. Her life has also been shaped by personal difficulties and struggles. In childhood, she faced family-related problems and difficult circumstances. She later studied law and built her career in public service.

Her political journey began in the Atlanta City Council. She gained national recognition after being elected mayor in 2017. She later also had a role in the Joe Biden administration.

New Challenges Await

Now that she is governor, the field has become bigger. During the campaign, she spoke about local development, better government services and healthcare facilities. She now has to turn these promises into action and build cooperation amid Republican opposition.
