Heavy Rain Alert: The Southwest Monsoon has finally gained momentum across the country. Under its influence, heavy downpours are expected in several parts of Southern and Northeast India on Monday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), moisture-laden winds blowing from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are likely to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple states. Consequently, the weather department has issued an alert for coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Konkan, and the northeastern states.

Highest Rainfall Expected in Karnataka Today

The IMD predicts that coastal Karnataka will witness the highest rainfall today. Mangaluru and its neighboring areas are bracing for very heavy downpours, with isolated pockets potentially experiencing extremely heavy spells. After making landfall in Kerala last week, the monsoon has now advanced into parts of Goa, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. This development has brought much-needed respite to farmers after a prolonged heatwave, prompting them to accelerate preparations for the Kharif (monsoon) crop season.

Northeast States to Witness Heavy Downpours

Monsoon activity is also rapidly intensifying across Northeast India. A heavy rainfall warning has been issued for several areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Waterlogging and traffic disruptions are anticipated in several cities, including Guwahati. Meanwhile, isolated places in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also likely to record heavy showers. Meteorologists note that such widespread rain during the early days of June is a standard feature of the monsoon’s progression.

Heatwave Conditions Persist in Several Parts of the Country

While rain brings relief to many regions, heatwave conditions continue to scorch parts of Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan. According to the weather department, the monsoon trough has not yet reached North India, keeping temperatures high. Furthermore, due to the potential development of El Niño this year, below-normal rainfall has been projected. Despite these factors, the monsoon is expected to advance further in the coming days.
