Inmates Found HIV Positive in Jail

Four inmates in the Janjgir-Champa district jail have tested positive for HIV, causing concern within the prison administration and the health department. The test results have raised serious questions regarding the treatment, monitoring, and causes of the infection. The emergence of HIV cases in a controlled setting like a prison has sparked extensive debate.

Four Inmates Test Positive

The four inmates tested positive for HIV during health check-ups conducted at the district hospital. Following confirmation, the jail administration immediately contacted the health department to arrange for their treatment. The inmates are now receiving regular medication and undergoing routine testing within the jail.

Investigation Underway

District Jail Superintendent Dr. D. Tonder stated that health check-ups are always conducted before any prisoner is admitted to the jail, and that blood pressure, sugar, and other essential tests are performed regularly. The HIV-positive inmates are currently being treated with medicines sourced from Bilaspur in accordance with medical services.

How HIV Spreads

The major question remains how the virus spreads within the prison. Experts note that HIV infection can occur for various reasons. It is possible that some inmates were already infected before entering the jail and were only diagnosed during this testing. Meanwhile, the health department clarified that HIV does not spread through casual contact, living together, sharing food, or shaking hands. Transmission primarily occurs through infected blood, unprotected sexual contact, infected needles, or from mother to child.

Questions About Prison Safety

Following the discovery, the health department and jail administration are reviewing the matter to determine the cause of transmission and to prevent future occurrences. The infected inmates are currently undergoing treatment, and the administration is continuously monitoring their health. This incident has led to debates regarding health facilities, routine screening, and infection control systems within prisons.
