Ujjain-Indore Metropolitan Region: Bhoomi Pujan of the First Road Held Today

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar are set to perform the bhoomi pujan (ground-breaking ceremony) today for the Indore–Ujjain Greenfield Corridor. This will be the first road whose construction is being launched under the Ujjain-Indore Metropolitan Region project.

The approximately 48-kilometre-long corridor, being developed with Simhastha 2028 in mind, carries a total cost of ₹2,935 crore. The ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled at Chandrawatiganj in the Sanwer assembly constituency at 11 AM.

The Route

The corridor will begin from the Pitru Parvat area in Indore and end near the Chintaman Ganesh Temple on the Simhastha Bypass in Ujjain. Once complete, it will significantly reduce the distance and travel time between the two cities, and will provide major convenience to the millions of pilgrims expected to attend Simhastha 2028. Devotees and tourists arriving at Indore Airport will also be able to reach Ujjain directly via this route. Earlier in the day, CM Yadav inspected ongoing Simhastha-related works in Ujjain, including the Kanh Closed Duct project.

Farmer Compensation

The project has affected approximately 242.94 hectares of land belonging to 917 farmers, for whom the government has paid compensation of over ₹816 crore. The corridor will directly connect 20 villages in Indore district and 8 villages in Ujjain district, while an estimated 15 lakh people from 40 to 50 surrounding villages are expected to benefit.

Review Meetings on Urban Development

Both leaders also participated in state-level review meetings at the Administrative Complex on urban local bodies, the Swachh Bharat Mission, and the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). Cabinet Ministers Kailash Vijayvargiya, Pradyumna Singh Tomar, and Pratibha Bagri, along with senior officials from the central and state governments, were present.

Simhastha to Be a Zero-Waste Event

Union Minister Khattar, speaking at a press briefing after the nearly two-hour-long meeting, said that discussions were held on making Simhastha 2028 a zero-waste event, and that Indore's cleanliness model will be replicated across the country. He also noted that under the Swachh Bharat Mission, a plan worth ₹3,680 crore has been drawn up, with the central government's contribution standing at ₹2,036 crore.

One Crore Smart Meters to Be Installed in MP

Khattar announced that over one crore smart meters will be installed across Madhya Pradesh, as part of a nationwide target of 20 crore meters. The tender process for this is targeted to be completed by August 15, 2026. Prepaid meters will first be introduced in government offices and for government employees, with large consumers to be covered in the second phase. He also stressed the need to promote solar energy and give special attention to wind power in the state.
