Tensions between Iran and the United States have flared up once again following fresh attacks, with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) resuming strikes on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC has now targeted two ships belonging to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the strait.
Cruise missile strike leaves Indian national dead
According to the UAE's Ministry of Defence, Iran fired two cruise missiles at two of its national tanker vessels, the Mombasa and the Al Bahia, along the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz, near Omani waters. The attack killed one Indian crew member aboard the Mombasa. Both vessels caught fire as a result of the strike, causing considerable damage, though the blazes have since been brought under control.
Eight others injured
The UAE Ministry of Defence said eight other people were injured in the attack, including six Indian nationals and two Ukrainian nationals. Four of the injured are reported to be in a critical condition.
Defence ministry condemns attack
The UAE's Ministry of Defence strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a brazen act and a serious violation of international law that represents a clear act of defiance. It termed the strike a threat to regional security and stability.
UAE reserves right to respond
The ministry stressed that the UAE reserves the full right to respond to such actions and to take all necessary measures to protect its territories, people and residents, in order to safeguard its sovereignty, security and stability, as well as its interests and national capabilities. The ministry made clear that the country remains fully alert and prepared to deal with any threat, and is taking all necessary steps to firmly counter any attempt aimed at undermining the nation's security and stability.
Appeal to the public
The UAE Ministry of Defence has appealed to the public to rely only on official national sources for information, and urged people to avoid spreading rumours or unverified reports.
