Gaza, May 27, 2026 — The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) scored a significant strategic blow on Wednesday, eliminating Muhammad Odeh, the newly appointed commander of Hamas's military wing, in a targeted strike in the Gaza Strip.
Odeh had played a central role during the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, serving as the head of Hamas's intelligence staff during the brutal assault. He had been appointed as the new chief of Hamas's military wing just one week before his death.
His predecessor in the role, Ezzedine al-Haddad, had also been killed by Israeli forces in a precision airstrike in Gaza just two weeks earlier — underscoring Israel's relentless campaign to dismantle Hamas's military leadership from the top down.
The operation was carried out under the direct orders of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, and was officially confirmed through a post on social media platform X by the Israeli Prime Minister's office.
Reacting to the strike, Netanyahu reaffirmed his government's resolve to pursue every individual responsible for the October 7 massacre, warning that no one involved would escape Israeli accountability.
On a separate front, Israel's military campaign simultaneously intensified in Lebanon. The Israeli Air Force carried out heavy strikes on southern Lebanon's Tyre and Marjayoun districts, hitting multiple towns including Burj Rahal and Srifa. The strikes killed at least 31 people and left more than 40 others injured.
The Lebanon escalation follows Netanyahu's directive to the military to accelerate operations against Hezbollah, particularly amid signals from Washington that the United States may support a broader Israeli campaign against the Iran-backed group. Netanyahu has stated that Israel has eliminated more than 600 militants in recent weeks and has no intention of slowing its military pace.
