Rajgarh, Madhya Pradesh: A joyful afternoon on a farm in Khilchipur turned tragic when a newly dug well collapsed, burying two women alive. Rupabai and her daughter-in-law Pinkibai — wife of local Janpad member Mukesh Dangi — had just finished eating dal-baati, cooked on the farm to celebrate the well's near-completion, when disaster struck.

After the meal, the two women stepped toward the well's edge to arrange gravel for a small livestock water trough. The ground suddenly gave way, and both were swallowed into the 75-foot-deep well in seconds.

Villagers rushed to dig them out bare-handed, but wet, collapsing soil made it impossible. Over 100 rescue personnel with JCB machines and excavators worked for four to five hours before recovering the bodies.

Mukesh Dangi, who lost both his mother and wife, is left with three young children. Neighbours said the two women were unusually close — more like mother and daughter than in-laws. "There is no one left in the house to light the stove," one villager said.

Authorities suspect continuous watering of the soil around the well's RCC boundary weakened the ground, leading to the collapse. An investigation is underway.
