Drone debris fell on a private childcare centre in the Russian city of Krasnodar on Sunday night, causing major damage. Regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev said the attack killed two children, while nine people in total, including seven children, were reported injured.
Debris also fell on nearby buildings, sparking fires in several places. Following the attack, a fire also broke out at the logistics hub of online retailer Ozon.
The company confirmed the fire itself on Telegram. Goods stored in the warehouse were destroyed. Ordinary Russians who earn a living selling goods online are being directly affected by the loss.
Following the attack, Russia launched a retaliatory strike on Ukraine. The same night, a Russian attack on the outskirts of Kharkiv, in north-eastern Ukraine, killed three people.
Kharkiv's governor shared this information on Telegram late at night. Ukraine is now seeking additional interceptor missiles from the United States and European countries to help stop such attacks.
Meanwhile, a drone attack also targeted an industrial area in Nevinnomyssk in Russia's Stavropol region, near Krasnodar. Governor Vladimir Vladimirov said security forces thwarted the attack.
The area houses a chemical production zone, so vigilance has been stepped up. Ukraine has been increasing attacks on logistics hubs and warehouses inside Russia in recent times. In the war that began in February 2022, ordinary Russian civilians are now increasingly being targeted.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Kyiv had opened a "Pandora's box" by attacking Russian economic targets. He warned that Moscow would retaliate against Ukraine's most sensitive economic sectors.
These attacks are taking place in the fifth year of the war. Civilians on both sides are losing their lives. Krasnodar, a place once considered relatively calm, is now clearly facing the threat of drone attacks. Local authorities have stepped up rescue and relief work, and treatment of the injured is under way.
