Clouds of uncertainty have gathered over the trade deal between the United States and Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended trade negotiations with the US, calling last-minute changes to the terms proposed by Washington unfair and economically impractical. Notably, the decision comes at a time when US President Donald Trump had expressed hope that a trade deal between the two countries could be reached.

What did the Canadian Prime Minister say?

Announcing the suspension of talks on the trade deal with the US, Carney said that over the past 18 months, Canada's new government had focused on strengthening its position domestically, diversifying its partnerships abroad, and reaching a fair agreement with the United States.

Declaring the suspension of trade talks, he said that in recent weeks, Canada had made significant progress in strengthening its position toward securing the best possible deal with the US. However, he said, this progress was not enough to serve the interests of Canadian citizens and Canada's objectives. He added that he had therefore decided this evening to suspend trade talks with the US and had instructed Canadian negotiators to return to Ottawa.

US says Canada responsible for talks breaking down

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer blamed Canada for the halt in negotiations. He said Canada had put forward new demands and backed away from some of its earlier commitments, which meant the two countries could not reach an agreement.

US ready to impose tariffs of up to 50% on Canada

Ottawa's decision to halt trade talks comes at a time when the Trump administration is preparing to impose tariffs of up to 50% on Canada. Canada, for its part, has already warned that it could impose retaliatory tariffs on American products.

Following the suspension of talks, Canada is now set to work on reducing its dependence on the US. To this end, it will focus on strengthening its domestic economy and expanding its trade relationships with other countries.
