Tension in West Asia is no longer limited to a clash between Iran and the US, the report says. It says Russia's role in efforts to find a solution, military action after a Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia, and tighter control of key sea routes have made the situation more complex. The phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has drawn attention to the chances of a diplomatic solution, but tension on the ground continues.
Russia's role in Iran talks
According to the Kremlin, the main subject of the phone conversation between Putin and Trump was a settlement of the Ukraine war, but developments related to Iran were also discussed. It has been reported that the Russian president welcomed participation in efforts to resolve the Iran issue. However, there is no confirmation of any concrete agreement or an immediate easing of tension from the conversation.
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian also stressed that regional diplomacy should not be limited to meetings. He said it should be a means of crisis management, keeping dialogue open, preventing escalation and practical cooperation.
Curbs on ship movement in Hormuz
Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it targeted a large LPG carrier named "NV Sunshine". According to the Iranian side, the ship was trying to pass along a route south of the Strait of Hormuz that it described as illegal.
On the other hand, US Central Command (CENTCOM) has said that US forces have redirected 133 commercial ships under the maritime restrictions imposed on Iran. The Strait of Hormuz is extremely important for global energy trade. A prolonged disruption here could affect oil and gas supply, freight and international markets.
Military operation in Yemen after attack on Saudi Arabia
Trump expressed displeasure after reports that three people were killed in a Houthi attack on an airport in Saudi Arabia. A pilot is reported to be among the dead. Following this, the Saudi-led coalition announced a major military operation against Houthi fighters and their defence infrastructure in Yemen.
The development has raised fears that the Yemen conflict could widen. The Houthi movement has long been a key part of the Yemen conflict and regional security disputes. Instability in the Red Sea and nearby sea routes could also affect international shipping.
Issue of US citizens' deaths in West Bank
Meanwhile, US Senator Chris Van Hollen has accused the US ambassador to Israel of withholding information related to the killing of US citizens in the occupied West Bank. The allegation also highlights the diplomatic challenges facing the US amid regional developments. The allegation should be seen separately from any independent confirmation of it.
