Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered to help end the conflict in the Middle East. He told Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that Russia is ready to contribute to resolving the situation.
The two leaders met in the capital of Turkmenistan during the summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Putin said Iran was not responsible for the war and had made sincere efforts to stop the conflict.
Putin: Russia will do all it can
According to Russian news agency TASS, Putin said Russia was ready to do everything within its power and authority to help find a diplomatic solution.
Putin said Tehran had made genuine and honest efforts to end the war, which he said the US and Israel had launched against Iran. He blamed the unilateral policies of Iran's adversaries for the conflict.
Pezeshkian: Iran will stay at the table, but not at the cost of its rights
According to a statement from the Iranian president's office, Pezeshkian said Iran would never step back from the path of a diplomatic solution.
Pezeshkian said Iran remained committed to dialogue and negotiations. However, he said the US often launched fresh attacks whenever talks took place. He added that Iran still stayed at the negotiating table.
He thanked Russia for opposing unilateral US moves at the United Nations. Pezeshkian also made it clear that Iran wanted the war to end. He said Iran would not accept any agreement that ignored its sovereign rights.
Economic and strategic cooperation also discussed
Besides the war and diplomatic options, the two leaders discussed ways to expand economic, trade and strategic cooperation between Russia and Iran.
Both countries reiterated their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. Russia and Iran are already working together on several regional and strategic issues.
