Tensions between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz continue to escalate in the Middle East, with Washington having carried out fresh air strikes on Iranian territory in recent days. In response, Iranian-backed forces have reportedly targeted a US base in the region.

Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani has made a significant claim regarding the strikes, stating that more than 30 people have lost their lives as a result of the recent US attacks.

Writing on social media platform X, she offered condolences to the bereaved families, saying the government would stand firmly with the people and describing southern Iran as "the beating heart" of the nation.

Seven Iranian soldiers killed in US strike

Iran's military has said that seven soldiers were killed in a strike on the Bampur garrison in Iranshahr, south-eastern Iran. Iranian armed forces described the American attack as a "cowardly assault" and vowed a firm response "at an appropriate time".

According to the Tasnim news agency, the US fired 13 missiles at the garrison. Seven soldiers from the 388th Brigade were killed in the strikes, with several others injured. The Iranian military said prior security preparations had helped limit casualties and damage.

Iranian officials claimed the US intended to cause maximum damage, with the strikes targeting the base's guest house, security checkpoints and soldiers' living quarters.

"Houthis do not act on Iran's orders"

Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has written to UN Secretary-General António Guterres stating that Yemen's Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) does not act on Iran's instructions, calling claims to the contrary "entirely baseless".

Iravani said the Sana'a-based authorities represent a significant portion of the Yemeni population and make their own decisions in the interests of the Yemeni people. However, the Houthi movement is widely regarded as a close ally of Iran, having carried out numerous attacks against Israel in recent years in what it describes as solidarity with Palestine.
