Ahead of the third and final ODI against Afghanistan, the Indian cricket team management has raised quite a few eyebrows by adding fast bowler Harshit Rana to the squad. With India already holding an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, the sudden inclusion of Rana for just the final game has sparked discussions among cricket enthusiasts.

Many cricket experts believe that this move is not just a requirement for a single match, but a tactical step toward preparing for the upcoming tour of England. If Harshit Rana gets an opportunity in the Chennai ODI and delivers a strong performance, it could make future selection decisions much easier for the team management.

Arshdeep Singh Likely to be Rested

Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has been in fine form, picking up a total of 5 wickets in the first two matches of the Afghanistan series. Given the dead rubber scenario, the team management might opt to rest Arshdeep and hand Harshit Rana a place in the playing XI. If this happens, it will be a clear indication that India is keen on testing and expanding its bench strength in the pace bowling department.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Friday that Harshit Rana has successfully completed his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) and has integrated with the squad in Chennai. Rana was unfortunately ruled out of the recently concluded T20 World Cup and the subsequent IPL season due to a severe knee surgery, but he is now fully fit and ready for international cricket.

BCCI Focuses on Grooming Youth
Interestingly, Harshit Rana is already considered a key part of India's plans for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England later this month. Therefore, the Chennai ODI serves as a massive platform for him to prove his match fitness and form.

Following the injury concerns surrounding Hardik Pandya, finding reliable pace-bowling all-rounder options has become a top priority for selectors. Alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy, Rana is viewed as a long-term prospect for this role. All eyes will now be on the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. If Harshit Rana gets the nod and makes an impact, this match will serve as a crucial trial ahead of the high-profile England tour.
