Canada delivered a commanding performance in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B clash on Thursday, thrashing Qatar 6-0 to surge to the top of the standings.

Star striker Jonathan David was the undisputed hero of the evening, completing a hat-trick to cap an all-round dominant display. Canada controlled 78% of possession throughout the match, registered 10 shots on target, and earned 19 corner kicks compared to just one for Qatar.

The goals began flowing in the 16th minute when Sahil Larin broke the deadlock to put Canada ahead 1-0. David then added a second in the 29th minute before netting again just before half-time, sending Canada into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead.

Qatar showed brief resistance in the second half but crumbled in the 64th minute when Nathan Saliba made it 4-0. Qatar's misery deepened further when Mohammed Munae put the ball into his own net, making it 5-0. David then sealed his hat-trick in injury time, putting the final gloss on a historic victory for the Canadians.

Qatar, ranked 55th in the world, could not muster a single shot on target all game, while two of their players were shown red cards, leaving them severely undermanned for stretches of the contest.

With the win, Canada climbed to first place in Group B on four points, edging Switzerland — also on four points — on goal difference. Bosnia sit third, while Qatar drop to the bottom of the group.

Canada's next fixture is scheduled for June 25 at BC Place in Vancouver. Qatar, meanwhile, face Bosnia on the same date at Seattle Stadium in what is effectively a must-win encounter to stay alive in the tournament.
