Mumbai Rains: Andheri Subway Submerged in 5 Feet of Water, Local Trains Delayed, IMD Issues 4-Day Orange Alert

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and its western suburbs again from Wednesday morning, after intense overnight showers left several low-lying areas waterlogged. The Andheri subway was among the worst hit, with around 4 to 5 feet of water accumulating there, forcing authorities to shut it down for traffic.

Western suburbs bear the brunt

The western suburbs saw the heaviest rainfall, with continuous heavy showers reported across Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, Dahisar, Vile Parle, Santacruz and Bandra. Eastern suburbs including Mulund, Bhandup and Powai also experienced heavy rain. Several roads and low-lying areas began flooding as a result, with traffic moving slowly on LBS Road.

Andheri subway shut, waterlogging worsens commute

Due to continuous rainfall, the Andheri subway was completely submerged. After roughly 4 to 5 feet of water accumulated, the administration closed it to vehicles as a safety precaution, increasing traffic pressure on surrounding routes.

Local train services hit

Rain also disrupted Mumbai's lifeline local train services. Central Railway trains were running about 15 to 20 minutes late, and Harbour Line services were similarly delayed by 15 to 20 minutes. Western Line trains were delayed by 5 to 10 minutes as well, leaving commuters waiting at stations and complicating the morning office rush.

Thane records 137.12 mm rainfall

Thane saw heavy rain from late Tuesday night, though intensity eased somewhat afterwards. The district has recorded 137.12 mm of rainfall so far.

4-day orange alert for Mumbai and three other districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad for the next four days, forecasting heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Mumbai through Saturday — particularly on July 2 and 3, when all these coastal districts are expected to see heavy to very heavy rainfall. Local administrations have stepped up preparedness measures accordingly.

Red alert for Raigad, warnings for Thane and Palghar

The IMD has issued a red alert for Raigad district for Thursday, warning of extremely heavy rain along with thunderstorms, strong winds and lightning. Thane and Palghar districts will remain under an orange alert for the next five days, with heavy to very heavy rain expected there too. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and follow weather department advisories.
