New Delhi: Security has been tightened across Delhi as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) holds a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut criticised the Centre over the measures.
He alleged that trains of people travelling to Delhi for the protest were stopped, protesters were detained and the capital's borders were sealed. Raut said the voice of the people cannot be suppressed.
Raut says security forces brought in from Jammu and Kashmir
Addressing a press conference in Pune, Raut said youths and members of various organisations from across the country wanted to reach Delhi to raise their demands. He alleged that harsh measures were being used to stop them.
He claimed that trains were stopped, borders sealed and workers detained. He also alleged that contingents of security forces had been called in from Jammu and Kashmir and deployed across Delhi to control the situation. Raut said this was not a political conspiracy but public anger, which cannot be suppressed by force.
Workers allegedly detained on arrival
Protesters reaching Delhi are reportedly being stopped at the airport and railway stations.
CJP's Abhijit Dipke shared a video after arriving in Delhi from Mumbai. He claimed that he and his associates were detained by police as soon as they landed at Delhi airport. The organisation has also claimed that YouTuber Dhruv Rathee has been detained.
Heavy security deployment across Delhi
The administration has made extensive arrangements to maintain law and order in the capital. More than 35,000 Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed.
New Delhi has been divided into 20 operational zones. Six places, including Chhatrasal Stadium, Rajiv Gandhi Stadium and Yamuna Sports Complex, have been turned into temporary centres to hold those detained.
On the recommendation of Delhi Police, entry and exit gates at about 57 metro stations have been closed and the movement of trains has been restricted. Several trains running from or passing through Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station have been cancelled or rescheduled.
Police strategy after 20 July protests
Taking lessons from the earlier protests on 20 July, police have drawn up a specific strategy this time. Personnel have been allowed to carry lathis.
They have also been told to avoid any verbal dispute or argument with protesters, so that misleading videos are not circulated on social media.
