Kolkata warehouse collapse
A major accident took place in Kolkata on Wednesday after a portion of an under-construction warehouse collapsed in the Taratala area. According to initial reports, at least five people have died, while around 40 workers are feared trapped under the debris.
The incident occurred at a transport depot where construction work on the warehouse was underway. Several labourers were present at the site when a large section of the roof suddenly gave way, triggering panic in the area.
Witnesses said heavy iron structures and concrete slabs came crashing down without warning, burying a number of workers beneath the rubble. Fire and emergency services, along with police personnel, rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation.
Local residents and workers nearby also joined efforts to pull people out from under the debris before rescue teams arrived.
Officials said construction and concrete casting work was in progress when the accident happened. A large portion of the warehouse structure reportedly collapsed, trapping workers underneath heavy steel frames and concrete debris.
Some people at the site claimed they could hear voices coming from beneath the rubble, raising hopes that more survivors could be rescued. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to reach those believed to be trapped.
Several ambulances have been deployed at the site. Workers rescued from the debris are being taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Some of the injured are reported to be in a serious condition.
Authorities have confirmed five deaths so far. However, the number of casualties may rise as rescue operations continue. Officials estimate that between 40 and 45 people could still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
