The United States has sent the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group and the USS Makin Island Amphibious Readiness Group towards the Middle East. Separately, an oil tanker was targeted in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's key oil routes. The two developments have drawn global attention to regional security, global energy supplies and the possibility of a wider confrontation.
US military pressure grows, warships being sent
According to US officials, roughly 9,000 sailors and Marines are aboard these ships, including about 2,000 Marines. Media reports say the deployment could leave the US with three aircraft carriers in the region by the end of October. The USS George H.W. Bush and the USS George Washington are already deployed around the Middle East. The USS Boxer Amphibious Readiness Group is also present in the region.
US officials say such a large military presence will give Washington several options in dealing with Iran. The development comes at a time when efforts at talks between the US and Iran have not led to a concrete agreement. President Donald Trump has not considered Iran's proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz sufficient, and has not ruled out stepping up attacks again in future.
Oil tanker attacked in Strait of Hormuz
An oil tanker was reportedly targeted by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz. According to UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the tanker caught fire, but the crew are reported to be safe. A full assessment of the damage and the environmental impact is not yet available. Iran's Fars news agency, citing local sources, said a supertanker with a capacity of about 25 lakh barrels was affected. The party responsible for the attack has not been independently confirmed.
Houthi activity in Yemen and regional impact
The tension is not limited to the sea. Houthi fighters in Yemen have intensified attacks in Taiz province. After recent Houthi advances in the coastal areas of the Red Sea, government forces have claimed to have steadied their positions on the fronts in and around Taiz. This has also raised concern over the safety of key sea routes such as the Red Sea and Bab-al-Mandeb.
Security probe and arrest in Britain
A security investigation linked to Iran has also taken a new turn in Britain. In a case linked to RAF Fairford, British police have arrested a 27-year-old man who holds British and Iranian dual nationality. Investigators have said they will continue to examine all aspects, including the possible role of a foreign state.
