Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Kyiv's decision to halt attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure is now over. He said Ukraine will resume attacks on Russian oil refineries. He accused Moscow of violating the "energy ceasefire" announced by the United States. He also accused Washington of warning Kyiv that intelligence sharing could be stopped, as Russia stepped up its attacks.

Energy ceasefire breaks down in three days

Zelensky said that, at Washington's request, Kyiv had stopped attacks on Russian energy facilities for three days. He said Russian forces continued to attack Ukraine's infrastructure during this period.

The development follows US President Donald Trump's announcement on 11 October of an immediate "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine. Under the agreement, both sides were to stop targeting each other's energy infrastructure.

Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social: "An 'energy ceasefire' has come into effect immediately in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have agreed to it. Do not break it!"

Zelensky: Enough is enough

Zelensky said the restriction on attacking refineries had ended. He said enough was enough.

His remarks suggest that Russia's energy infrastructure will again be targeted. Kyiv has repeatedly targeted Russia's energy infrastructure as part of a campaign to weaken Moscow's economic capacity to continue the war.

Deal under pressure after Russian attack

The agreement came under pressure after Zelensky accused Russia of carrying out a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine's energy and critical infrastructure. The attack left at least 600,000 people without electricity.

In a post on X, Zelensky said Russian forces used ballistic missiles and attack drones to target energy facilities in Kyiv, the Kyiv region and Kharkiv. He said the attacks caused heavy damage to equipment and infrastructure at 26 power systems and four facilities in the oil and gas sector.

Zelensky's latest announcement comes amid growing tension over the scope of the proposed ceasefire and the US role in influencing Kyiv's military decisions. He accused Washington of warning Ukrainian officials. He said intelligence sharing could be stopped if Kyiv did not halt attacks on Russian refineries.
