Petrol and Diesel Prices: Amid the ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States, petrol and diesel prices have once again been raised sharply across the country. In Madhya Pradesh, the continuously rising fuel prices have caused growing anxiety amongst ordinary people. Oil companies revised fuel prices upward again on 25 May. According to information received, petrol has been increased by ₹2.61 per litre and diesel by ₹2.71 per litre — a blow that is being seen as a significant burden on the common person's pocket.
Going by the revised prices issued by petroleum companies, petrol rates in several MP cities have now approached ₹115 per litre, whilst diesel has crossed the ₹100 mark. In Bhopal, from 6 o'clock on Monday morning, petrol is being sold at ₹114.65 per litre and diesel at ₹99.74 per litre.
Ujjain - Most Expensive Petrol in the State
Amongst the major cities of the state, Ujjain has become the most expensive, with petrol reaching ₹115.03 per litre and diesel ₹100.11 per litre. In Indore, petrol has risen to ₹114.54 and diesel to ₹99.57 per litre. Price increases have also been recorded in Jabalpur and Gwalior.
Prices Raised for the Fourth Time in 11 Days
This is the fourth time in the month of May that oil companies have raised prices. Since the initial hike on 15 May, petrol and diesel have become costlier by approximately ₹8 per litre.
When Were Rates Increased This Month?
15 May — Petrol increased by ₹3.14 per litre and diesel by ₹3.11 per litre for the first time.
19 May — Petrol and diesel prices rose by roughly 90 paise.
23 May — Petrol increased by 87 paise and diesel by 91 paise.
25 May (today) — Petrol raised again by ₹2.61 per litre and diesel by ₹2.71 per litre.
Freight Costs to Rise, Everyday Goods to Become Dearer
The rise in diesel prices will have a direct impact on transport. As lorry and goods vehicle charges increase, the prices of vegetables, fruit, rations, and other essential items are likely to go up. School bus, auto-rickshaw, and public transport fares are also expected to rise. Agriculture will be affected as well — increased costs of running tractors and pumping sets will push up farmers' expenses, which could in turn affect the prices of grains and food items.
Crude Oil Prices Cited as the Cause
The surge in international crude oil prices is being cited as the primary reason for this hike. Following the Iran–US tensions, crude oil has risen from around $70 per barrel to above $100 per barrel. Oil companies have stated that rising costs made a price revision unavoidable.
Kamal Nath Attacks the Government
Former Chief Minister Kamal Nath took to social media to criticise the government, saying that rather than controlling rising prices, the administration is placing the entire burden on the public. He alleged that when crude oil prices were low, no relief was passed on to the people, and now prices are being raised continuously.
