Vaibhav Suryavanshi Eyes Youngest T20I Century World Record in IND vs AFG Series

India and Afghanistan will play a three-match T20 series starting 13 September, with the second and third matches on 15 and 17 September. All three games will be held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, and 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi will have three fresh opportunities to chase down a world record.

If Suryavanshi scores a century in any of the three matches, he will become the youngest player in the world to hit a century in T20 International cricket. He had earlier set a world record on debut against England, becoming the second-youngest cricketer ever to debut in international cricket.

Pretorius Set the New Benchmark on 4 September

South Africa's Lhuan-dre Pretorius struck a century against Namibia on 4 September to become the youngest player to score a T20I century, overtaking Afghanistan's Hazratullah Zazai. Yashasvi Jaiswal was also pushed down in the process, dropping to third place on the list. If Vaibhav Suryavanshi manages even one century in the three-match series against Afghanistan, he would move past both Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal on the list as well.

Jaiswal and Tilak Varma's Earlier Feats

Yashasvi Jaiswal is the youngest Indian batsman to have scored a T20I century, having achieved the feat against Nepal in 2023 at the age of 21 years and 279 days. Tilak Varma has also reached the milestone twice, at the ages of 22 years 5 days and 22 years 7 days.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi is currently only 15 years old, and even if he takes another four years to score a century, he would still break the existing record. He had come close to the milestone against Zimbabwe but was dismissed for 81 runs. Against Afghanistan in Delhi, he now has three matches in which to complete the record.

Suryavanshi's Recent Form Fuels the Record Chase

Suryavanshi already holds the record for the youngest century in IPL history. He also recently broke a 57-year-old record by scoring a fifty in the Duleep Trophy, and set a new world record for the fastest fifty against Sri Lanka in the Tri-Nation A Series. He has played six matches for India so far, scoring 193 runs at an average of 32, including two half-centuries.
