Dhanbad land subsidence

A sudden case of land subsidence hit Chatabad, under the Katras police station area of Dhanbad district, on Tuesday, damaging several houses. Large cracks appeared in the walls and floors of homes, causing panic across the locality.

This is not the first such incident in the area. About 10 months ago, land had caved in at Ramkanali in Katras, at a site operated by the Maa Ambe outsourcing company under BCCL's Area-4. In that earlier incident, a company service van carrying six workers fell into a water-filled pit nearly 400 feet deep.

A night spent in fear

According to local residents, four to five houses were damaged in this latest subsidence, while several other homes developed deep cracks in their walls. Fearing further collapse, many families were forced to spend the entire night outside their homes on Tuesday. Affected residents say that if the ground gives way again, more houses could be affected — a fear that has kept them from returning indoors, forcing them to spend nights in the open.

Anger boils over after the incident

The subsidence has triggered strong resentment among residents of Katras. Angry villagers blocked the Katras-Dhanbad main road in protest. Affected families said they come from poor backgrounds and don't know where to go after suddenly losing their homes, warning that they will block the road again if their demands aren't met. They said cracks in walls and floors forced them to flee to save their lives, and that they're now too afraid to go back inside. The families have demanded proper compensation, rehabilitation in a safe location, and a permanent solution for the area.

Questions raised over illegal mining

Affected families say their protest will continue until concrete action is taken on their demands. Administration and police teams reached the site after being informed and assessed the situation, working to ensure the safety of affected families and restore normalcy. Locals say such incidents have occurred multiple times before in Katras, and they allege that illegal coal mining in the region is the recurring cause of these land subsidence events.
