A powerful explosion occurred in a bar in the famous luxury ski resort town of Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Several people died in the blast, while many others were injured. Swiss police stated that the cause of the explosion is not yet clear. Police and rescue teams are engaged in a rescue operation. The injured have been admitted to the hospital. The area has been sealed off.
A video of the accident has also emerged. According to Switzerland’s local media, the explosion occurred due to fireworks used during a concert on New Year’s Eve. Local radio station RhoneFM reported that the tragedy may have happened because of the improper use of fireworks. The broadcaster said that the death toll could be more than 20, while the number of victims may be around forty. According to the police, the explosion, which occurred for unknown reasons, caused a fire inside the establishment. Media spokesperson Gaetan Lathion said that information about the fire was received at around 1:30 a.m., and the fire was brought under control in the early hours of the morning.
The Valais Cantonal Police said in a press release that emergency operations are still ongoing and the area around the bar has been completely sealed off. Local media outlet Blick reported that authorities have also imposed a no-fly zone over Crans-Montana due to the ongoing rescue and investigation efforts.
Police officials said that more than 100 people were inside the bar at the time of the explosion. Swiss broadcaster RTS reported that the blast occurred in the basement of the bar, which has a total capacity of around 400 people. Videos widely shared on social media showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the bar immediately after the incident, highlighting the scale of the explosion and the subsequent fire.
