Indian Railway:

This week is going to be quite difficult for passengers travelling from Chandigarh railway station. The Ambala Division of Northern Railway has undertaken a major infrastructure upgrade project on the Delhi-Ambala main railway line. Due to this massive infrastructure project, Indian Railways has had to cancel, divert, and reschedule several prominent trains between May 30 and June 6. This sudden change is having a widespread impact on rail traffic across the entire region and on thousands of passengers.

Extension of Loop Lines and Modern Interlocking Work Begins

According to information, this crucial development work is being carried out between Shahbad Markanda and Mohri stations, where the Ambala Rail Division is extending loop lines. Along with this, a new electronic interlocking system is also being installed there. To commission this modern signalling system, the railways have taken a 6-day pre-non-interlocking block and a 1-day non-interlocking block on this route. This is a standard but highly disruptive procedure required to replace the signalling infrastructure.

22 Trains Cancelled, Thousands of Passengers Affected During Holidays

This technical work has caused a massive impact on rail traffic. Thousands of passengers who commute daily through this corridor are facing difficulties. According to the Railways, a total of 22 trains have been completely cancelled during this period. Apart from this, 29 trains have been diverted from their regular routes to alternative routes. Meanwhile, the timings of 8 trains have been rescheduled, and 20 other trains are being operated under regulation (controlled running).

Premium Trains Like Vande Bharat, Shatabdi Also Cancelled

The hardest hit on this route has been felt by the passengers' favourite and high-demand premium trains.

  • Ajmer-Chandigarh Garib Rath Express (12983) has been cancelled on May 31 and June 2.
  • The return service of the same train (12984) will not operate on June 1 and June 3.
  • Furthermore, on June 6, the New Delhi-Chandigarh Shatabdi Express (12045/12046) and the Ajmer-Chandigarh Vande Bharat Express (20977/20978) have been completely cancelled.

Routes of Long-Distance Trains Diverted; Ticket Refunds Without Penalty

Due to this work, several long-distance express trains have also been diverted.

  • Chandigarh-Yashvantpur Karnataka Sampark Kranti Express (22686) will run via Ambala-Saharanpur-Meerut-Ghaziabad on the upcoming June 2, instead of going via Panipat and New Delhi.
  • Similarly, the Chandigarh-Madgaon Goa Sampark Kranti Express (12450) will also complete its journey via a diverted route on June 1.

The Railways has advised passengers to check their train status before leaving for the station. On the other hand, as per rules, no penalty charges are being levied on the cancellation of these train tickets. Officials state that once this upgrade is completed, operational efficiency and safety on this busy rail route will be significantly enhanced.
