Railway Station Spitting Fine Doubled to Rs 1000 in Indore, TTEs Given Power to Penalise

Spitting at railway stations and premises will now cost passengers more heavily. The railways have doubled the penalty for spitting and littering within station premises, according to the report. Anyone caught spitting will now have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000, up from the earlier Rs 500. Railway officials say paan, gutkha and tobacco spit stains at station premises have been a major problem, with marks on walls and public areas affecting cleanliness. To curb this, ticket-checking staff have also been given the authority to take action.

TTEs (Travelling Ticket Examiners) can now issue fines to those found littering or spitting at the station, alongside checking tickets. The stepped-up enforcement comes as cases of swine flu have been reported, with stricter measures being enforced at various locations. A notification regarding the increased fine has already been issued. Officials say the higher penalty amount is expected to bring down cases of littering.

No More Spit Stains, Less Cleaning Trouble

The railways have also adopted new technology to prevent littering. A special paint based on nanotechnology is being used, which appears transparent under normal conditions but prevents paan and gutkha spit stains from sticking to its surface easily. This is expected to reduce stains on walls and make cleaning easier. The technology has currently been introduced at Ujjain station in the division, and its use at other stations will depend on the results.

Objective Is Not to Collect Money

According to the railways, the Railway Ministry's main objective behind raising the fine amount is not merely to collect money, but to bring about a change in people's habits. Officials say cleanliness at several stations can only improve if ordinary citizens cooperate. They note that when heavy fines are imposed for littering, passengers are expected to become more conscious of their responsibility towards cleanliness and dispose of waste in dustbins.
