Jodhpur: As rail traffic continues to grow in Jodhpur, the infrastructure for train operations and maintenance is set for a major overhaul. Keeping in view the rising passenger load and the need for new trains and modern coaches, Bhagat Ki Kothi railway station is being developed into a state-of-the-art mega coaching terminal at a cost of nearly ₹397.69 crore. The station, which currently sees more than 10,000 passengers passing through daily, is planned to be developed into a major rail operations hub for Jodhpur in the coming years.
Under the project, three new full-length platforms will be built at Bhagat Ki Kothi railway station in Jodhpur. There are currently three platforms, and once construction is complete, the number will rise to six. Alongside this, three modern covered-shed maintenance pit lines, two sick lines, one wheel lathe line, four stabling lines and two washing-cum-stabling lines will be developed. For passenger convenience, an office building, modern stores, internal roads, a foot overbridge, lifts, escalators, a second entry gate and a well-organised circulating area will also be built.
Facilities such as modern pit lines and the wheel lathe will cut down the time taken for train maintenance. The brake systems, suspension, air pipes, undergear, wheels and other safety equipment of coaches will be inspected using modern methods. This will help in preparing more rakes in less time and increasing the availability of trains.
Once the project is complete, Bhagat Ki Kothi could become one of the key coach maintenance and operations centres of North Western Railway. This will strengthen Jodhpur's rail network and technical infrastructure while also boosting the capacity to run new trains in future.
DRM Anurag Tripathi said the Bhagat Ki Kothi mega coaching terminal, being developed at a cost of ₹397.69 crore, will give fresh strength to the maintenance capacity of Jodhpur division. Along with modern pit lines, wheel lathe, and stabling and washing facilities, three new platforms will be developed, creating the infrastructure needed to operate new trains in future.
