New Delhi: The controversy has deepened after serious allegations of sexual harassment were made against Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor and Congress MP from Manipur. Delhi Police have registered an FIR and begun an investigation. On Monday, the BJP Mahila Morcha staged a protest outside the Congress headquarters on Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg in New Delhi.

Protesters carried placards and demanded justice for the students who have made the allegations against Akoijam. Party workers raised slogans such as "JNU ki 11 betiyan, nyay ki haqdar betiyan" (JNU's 11 daughters, daughters who deserve justice). They also urged the Congress top leadership to take strict action against the MP.

JNU security officer's complaint leads to FIR

JNU's chief security officer had filed a complaint with Delhi Police. Police then registered a case at Vasant Kunj North police station under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the information available, at least 11 students of the university submitted complaints of sexual harassment against Akoijam in May. The students have alleged that the MP called them to his official residence in the name of meetings or events and tried to behave inappropriately with them. They have also alleged that he made indecent and objectionable remarks during class.

Internal committee probe, says Bansuri Swaraj

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said at a press conference that, following the complaints, the JNU administration had set up an Internal Complaints Committee under the POSH Act. She said that after the committee found the allegations to be correct, the university decided to remove Akoijam from his post.

BJP questions Rahul Gandhi: "Is feminism limited to hashtags?"

The BJP has questioned the silence of the Congress leadership on the issue. Attacking Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi, Swaraj said, "Congress's feminism is limited to social media hashtags and slogans. The moment accountability is mentioned, they fall silent. Was Rahul Gandhi's 'Smash the Patriarchy' statement merely a political deception?"
