The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the purchase of 240 aero-engines for Sukhoi fighter jets, with a budget of 26 thousand crore rupees. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will make the purchase. The AL-31FP engine is installed in the Indian Air Force's Sukhoi-30 MKI (SU-30MKI) fighter jets. The delivery of these engines will start one year from now and will be completed within eight years. More than 54 percent of the content in these engines will be indigenous.
Their production will take place in HAL's Koraput division. Upgradation of Sukhoi will be done in a phased manner. Along with this, the Indian Air Force has issued a tender to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the purchase of 12 advanced Sukhoi-30 fighter jets. The production will take place in India in partnership with Russian original equipment manufacturers.
This upgrade will give a big boost to the Indian Air Force's strength and reduce dependence on foreign equipment manufacturers.
To enhance Sukhoi's strike capability, it will be equipped with advanced radar, new engines, IRST sensors, next-generation RWR, advanced jammers, avionics, new EW suite, DFCC, Indian missiles, and bombs. After upgradation at HAL, Sukhoi-30 will not remain a Russian jet, but will become an Indian jet with 78 percent indigenous content. It is worth noting that the Indian Air Force's Sukhoi-30 MKI, made in Russia, is one of the most powerful and strategically important fighter fleets in the Indian Air Force.
