Iran launched missile and drone strikes on Kuwait on Thursday, targeting American military installations in the country, as tensions between Washington and Tehran flared once again. Kuwait's armed forces confirmed the attack and said they had activated the country's air defence system in response.

Kuwaiti Military Confirms Attack, Activates Air Defence

Kuwait's army issued a statement on social media platform X confirming the strikes and said any loud explosions heard by residents were the result of the air defence system intercepting the incoming missiles and drones. The military urged citizens to follow safety and evacuation guidelines issued by the relevant authorities.

US Military Bases Targeted, No Official Comment Yet

Iran's state news agency confirmed the attack on Kuwait, claiming that American military bases in the country had been the target. However, Iran has not officially commented on the strikes, and the United States has yet to respond to the latest attack.

US Strikes on Iran Last Month Killed 18, Including a Child

The latest escalation comes a month after the United States carried out large-scale strikes on Iran that killed 18 people, including two women and a child, and left 142 injured, among them 61 women and 44 people under the age of 18. The figures were shared by Iranian health ministry spokesperson Hussein Kermanpour on X.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed grief over the deaths, noting that a wedding ceremony had been targeted in the strikes. He conveyed condolences to those killed and injured, strongly condemned the attack on civilians, and voiced serious concern over the renewed hostilities between the US and Iran.

Australia Says Hormuz Strait Shipping Curbs Unacceptable

Amid the ongoing tensions, Australia has expressed displeasure over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles told local media that it was essential to keep the strait open, adding that Iran's actions ran counter to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the principle of freedom of navigation. He said Iran's continued attempts to restrict shipping through the strait were unacceptable.
