Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has taken command of the International Space Station (ISS) and is leading the orbiting laboratory for the second time. Sunita Williams and Vic Willmore had originally planned to stay on the ISS for eight days, but their return was canceled due to technical issues with the spacecraft. They are now expected to return to Earth in February 2025.
Sunita Lyn Williams (née Pandya; born September 19, 1965) is an American astronaut of Indian descent, a retired US Navy officer, and holds the record for the most spacewalks by a woman (seven) and the most spacewalk time by a woman (50 hours, 40 minutes). Sunita Williams was assigned to the International Space Station as a member of Expedition 14 and Expedition 15.
Sunita Williams had worked as a flight engineer on Expedition 32 in 2012 and then as the commander of Expedition 33. She returned to the ISS in 2024 as part of the Boeing crew flight. However, due to technical issues, her return has been delayed until February 2025.
