Hanumangarh: 3 Boys Drown in Rajasthan Irrigation Reservoir While Trying to Save Each Other; Two Were Real Brothers

Three boys drowned in an irrigation reservoir, locally called a "diggi," in Barmsar village of Hanumangarh district's Pallu tehsil on Sunday afternoon, after one of them slipped in while trying to save a sheep and the others jumped in after him.

The incident occurred around 3:30 pm at a diggi situated on the Mega Highway, part of the Kumbharam Arya Lift canal under the Indira Gandhi Nahar Pariyojana (IGNP). Four boys — cousins from the village — had gone out to graze their sheep when one of the animals slipped into the reservoir while drinking water. According to the police complaint filed later, one of the boys tried to save the sheep and slipped in himself. The three others, who were standing nearby, jumped in to rescue him.

None of the four could swim.

One Boy Escaped by Holding a Pipe

One of the four, Ramchandra, son of Sitaram, managed to grab hold of a pipe placed in the reservoir and pull himself out after a struggle. He then raised an alarm, which was heard by farmers working in nearby fields and villagers, who rushed to the spot.

The other three — Bajrang (19), son of Shyonarayan Goswami; Kanwar Pal (15), also son of Shyonarayan; and Sunil (14), son of Palgar Goswami — drowned in the reservoir.

Locals informed Dhannasar police outpost in-charge Sahiram, who reached the spot with his team and, with the help of villagers, pulled the three boys out of the water. They were rushed by ambulance to the trauma centre in Rawatsar, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

Rawatsar police station in-charge Ajay Kumar and Circle Officer Vikram Chauhan also reached the spot, while Hanumangarh Superintendent of Police B. Aditya went to the trauma centre after being informed of the deaths. Postmortem examinations were carried out in the presence of police, and the bodies were handed over to the families.

Case Registered, Probe Underway

Surajit, son of Gangaram Goswami, filed a complaint (मर्ग) at the Dhannasar police post, stating that his nephews Ramchandra, Bajrang, Sunil and Kanwar Pal had gone out to graze sheep on Sunday afternoon. He said a sheep drinking water at a diggi under the IGNP canal network slipped in, and his nephew tried to save it before slipping in himself, prompting the other three to jump in after him.

Rawatsar police station in-charge Ajay Kumar is investigating the case.

Sunil Was the Only Brother Among Seven Sisters

Villager Jawahar Lal Sihag said Sunil was the only brother among seven sisters, while Bajrang and Kanwar Pal were the two brothers in a family of three sisters. Both families lost their sons in the tragedy, and the village has been left in mourning.
