Assistant Professor Recruitment 2026: Amid a severe shortage of teachers in government colleges across the state, assistant professor recruitment has once again come under scrutiny. Announcements and assurances have been made for years, yet a formal recruitment advertisement is yet to be issued — leaving thousands of NET, SET, and PhD-qualified candidates frustrated.
Two years ago, the then Higher Education Minister Brijmohan Agarwal had announced 2,169 assistant professor vacancies, but the process never moved forward. Financial approval was subsequently granted for 625 posts, yet candidates claim that nearly eight months have passed since the finance department gave its clearance with no notification issued. Approximately 50,000 candidates who hold NET, SET, or PhD qualifications are still waiting.
How Many Posts Are Approved, How Many Lie Vacant?
As of February 2026, Chhattisgarh's 649 government colleges have 5,406 sanctioned assistant professor posts, of which 2,498 are reported vacant. All 780 sanctioned professor posts are also lying empty. The vacancies are taking a visible toll on the quality of higher education, with many colleges running on guest lecturers and skeleton staff.

Professor Recruitment Drags On, Candidates Age Out
Frustration is equally mounting over the long-delayed professor recruitment. Twenty-six years after the state's formation, the process remains incomplete. An advertisement for professor posts was issued through the Public Service Commission in 2021, but five years on, the process is still unfinished — the list of eligible and ineligible candidates has not even been released.
Candidates say the repeated delays have left their futures hanging. Many are anxious about age limits and career prospects, with neither the department nor the commission offering clear answers. Questions are also being raised about the functioning of the Higher Education Department, with persistent complaints that assistant professors are not receiving timely completion of probation periods or the benefits associated with senior and selection-grade promotions.
